Mentorship

Someone opened the door for him. Now he holds it.

Through AJ Educational Empowerment, Dr. Johnson mentors the students and early-career clinicians coming up behind him, especially those who, like him, are the first in their family to reach medicine.

AJ Educational Empowerment.

Dr. Johnson founded AJ Educational Empowerment LLC to empower people of all backgrounds through education. A first-generation college graduate and physician, he knows how much a single mentor can change a trajectory, because it changed his.

He mentors pre-medical and podiatry students, guides residents and fellows, and speaks to future clinicians about the parts of the journey no syllabus covers: the application, the interview, the setbacks, and the habits that compound over a career. His mentees have matched into competitive residencies and won national awards of their own.

“Dr. Alton Johnson has been one of the most influential mentors in my journey to becoming a podiatric surgeon. I first met him while serving on the Barry Without Borders Bahamas medical mission trip as a student, where his passion for teaching and serving the underserved left a lasting impression on me. Since then, he has continued to invest in my growth, offering me guidance and encouragement throughout medical school and now into my residency training. His mentorship has played an invaluable role in shaping both the physician and person I strive to be. I feel incredibly blessed to know him and to have had him as a mentor.”

“Dr. Johnson’s mentorship has been invaluable in helping me think beyond the present moment. He has consistently challenged me to approach opportunities strategically, not just for my own growth, but for the advancement of podiatry as a profession. Whether reviewing emails, refining ideas, or encouraging me to pursue national opportunities, he has always pushed me to think bigger and represent podiatry from a resident’s perspective. His guidance has helped shape how I advocate for myself, develop professionally, and build meaningful connections within organized medicine.”
